Hiring Practices

In Latvia, written employment contracts are legally required and must be provided in Latvian, and a language the employee understands if they don’t speak Latvian. Contracts must include:

  • Daily or weekly working hours

Background Checks

Employers may request medical exams to assess fitness for the role at their own expense. Criminal background checks can only be requested directly from the Ministry of the Interior. Employers must provide a medical referral form for a mandatory health check. This check must be completed and the results returned to the employer before the employee starts work. If desired, employers must ask the applicant to provide their certificate. All checks must be relevant to the role and compliant with data privacy laws under GDPR, the European Union’s data protection legislation.
